Entitled neighbor tells homeowners they can't mow their lawn on a Sunday morning: 'Some people want a quiet Sunday'

The beautiful silence of a calm and clear morning, the soft glow of the sun gently rising up in the sky, birds tweeting, a light breeze blowing across your face as you sit silently enjoying the warmth and serenity of the coming day… Suddenly, the silence is punctuated by a mower starting up, followed by another, and then another—now a leaf blower joins the chorus as everyone gets to tending to their grass and general outdoor maintenance while the time and weather permit. 

I think it's probably fair to say that any of us have experienced at least some annoyance at noise coming from our neighbors, but as long as that noise is within the bounds of reason—as it often is—we've quickly checked ourselves and come to reason with our more reasonable parts of ourselves.

  • Unfortunately, good weather is the perfect time to get outdoors and get to it with those chores that have been long needing doing—and most of these necessitate the use of mowers or other power tools that can be quite noisy. And that's just the way of it, it's a part of life that most of us can accept. 

    This entitled neighbor, however, wasn't able to deal with reality and tried to tell all of her neighbors that they should stop mowing their lawns at a perfectly reasonable time on a Sunday morning. This frustrated homeowner shared the exchange with this online community, deriding the neighbor's behavior.

    "Some people want a quiet Sunday."

    Today between 10:30am and 12pm this lady came up on four people on my street, one of the being my husband, and tried to tell them they needed to stop mowing the lawns. Her reason? Some people around here want a quiet Sunday. The final person she told, our neighbor Joe (fake name). A little aside about Joe, he is honestly the friendliest neighbor on the street. My husband and I joke he's the mayor of the street.

    Joe had stopped his mower to talk to my husband while he was walking my dog. This lady came up to them, with the same song and dance about wanting a quiet Sunday. Joe laughed and said, "We'd all be having one if you were at home instead of out here yapping off at people just trying to take care of their homes."

Turns out she lives at the end of the road that leads to our road (we live in a cul-de-sac), almost a quarter mile away from our home. - UPDATE — she's having a picnic. Should I go down there and tell her some people around here would like a quiet holiday? Ha.

My entitled neighbors all have lawn services but the lawn services aren't good enough so the OCD men have to re-mow, re-blow, etc. their properties all weekend. It's not like they can do it all at once, it's in succession. Plus, all week we have to hear their lawn services doing same. She would totally freak out here. LOL.

    PopularFunction5202 At least he's mowing during the day. I have a neighbor near me, and while I don't know his situation, I do know that he has a penchant for mowing at 9 pm on Sunday evenings. It's not quite dark yet, plus mowers have lights. That's a bit late in my estimation.

    Liv-Julia I live in rural Michigan and in the 60s we used to visit family friends in the Holland/Jenison area. That area was settled by the Dutch, all belonging to the strict Dutch Reform Church. One Sunday we were playing tag on the big front lawn and one of the neighbor ladies came over. She told us it was a sin to play on the Lord's day and we'd burn in hellfire!
